Ballroom Branch
The IDTA Associate is the first level of the Association’s professional dance teaching qualifications and prepares the candidate to teach dance in their chosen genre. The examination can be taken as a whole or in a modular format over a period of time.

Ballroom Branch: Ballroom, Latin and Classical Sequence
How will you be assessed?
The Associate is a practical examination conducted by an IDTA appointed Examiner. Candidates, both with a partner and individually, will be asked to demonstrate the appropriate dance genre to music and will be expected to answer technical questions.
Prerequisites
Candidates must be 18 years or over.
Future progression
Higher level professional teaching qualifications are available at Licentiate and Fellowship level.
Fees
Candidates for IDTA dance teaching qualifications are required to apply using the IDTA Professional Application Form and pay the examination fee in advance. Training fees are set by the teacher. Candidates taking their first dance teaching qualification will be required to pay a one off entrance fee in addition to their annual subscription for the year, your teacher or the IDTA Head Office can advise you and the fees are printed on the Examination Fees list available on the Members’ Area of the website or from IDTA Head Office.
Membership status
Ballroom, Latin and Classical Sequence are the “core-subject” genres within IDTA’s Ballroom Branch. Candidates who successfully pass the Associate qualification are invited to be members of the IDTA, on payment of an annual subscription. Members holding this qualification may enter candidates for examinations in the Ballroom dance genres and, as full members, may vote at the Annual General Meeting.

The technique for each genre can be found in the following publications; Ballroom – Technique of Ballroom Dancing by Guy Howard. Latin – The Laird Technique of Latin Dancing by Walter Laird. Theatre Branch (overseas only)
The IDTA Associate is the first level of the Association’s professional dance teaching qualifications and prepares the candidate to teach dance in their chosen genre. The examination can be taken as a whole or in a modular format over a period of time.
For UK Theatre Branch candidates, the Associate level qualification has been replaced by the Level 4 Diploma in Dance Teaching.

Theatre Branch: Ballet, Tap, Modern Jazz and Theatre Craft (overseas only)
How will you be assessed?
The qualification is a practical examination conducted by an IDTA appointed Examiner. Candidates are required to produce a portfolio for the IDTA Examiner to review in advance of the examination. Candidates will be asked to demonstrate and discuss with the Examiner all aspects of the syllabus. Technical aspects of the examination are from the Intermediate Performers Award. Candidates are also required to teach a small class of pupils so the Examiner may observe their teaching skills.
Prerequisites
Depending on age and experience, candidates may be required to hold an Intermediate Performers Award and/or New Pre-Associate qualification, plus hold an Anatomy & Physiology Diploma. Minimum age is 18 years old. Full details are given in the appropriate “Technique of Theatre Dance Book” available from the IDTA Shop.

Candidates who successfully pass the Associate qualification are invited to be members of the IDTA, on payment of an annual subscription. Members holding this qualification may enter candidates for examinations in the Theatre Branch dance genres and are termed “full members” which entitles them to vote at the Annual General Meeting.

The syllabi and technique for the Associate qualifications are listed in the appropriate “Technique of Theatre Dance Book”. The candidate will require a copy of the “Theatre Dance Syllabus, Grades and Medals” and also access to the set music CDs for the appropriate genre and level of examination. Freestyle Branch
The IDTA Freestyle Associate is the first level of the Association’s professional dance teaching qualifications and prepares the candidate to teach dance in their chosen genre. The examination can be taken as a whole or in a modular format over a period of time.

The Freestyle Associate qualification is a practical examination conducted by an IDTA appointed Examiner. Candidates will present a portfolio and will be asked to demonstrate this dance style and answer questions.
