Pre-Associate
The examination is designed as an introduction to professional teaching qualifications and to develop the candidate’s knowledge and understanding of the genre, so that they can assist a qualified teacher. Candidates training for the IDTA dance teaching qualifications are advised to take the Pre-Associate examination.

Ballroom Branch: Ballroom, Latin and Classical Sequence
How will you be assessed?
The Pre-Associate is a practical examination conducted by an IDTA appointed Examiner. Candidates, both with a partner and individually, will be asked to demonstrate the appropriate dance genre to music and will be expected to answer technical questions.
Prerequisites
Candidates must be 16 years or over.
Future progression
Higher level professional teaching qualifications are available at Associate, Licentiate and Fellowship level.
Fees
Candidates will be entered for the IDTA Pre-Associate examination by their dance teacher, using the Pre-Associate Application Form. Examination fees are paid via the dance teacher. Training fees are set by the teacher.
Membership status
Candidates who have successfully passed the Pre-Associate examination, will be invited to join the IDTA as Provisional Members. This membership status does not allow Provisional members to enter candidates for examinations or to attend the AGM. Provisional members receive a copy of the Dance International magazine and may attend IDTA national and regional seminars, to assist with their continuing professional development, at a discounted entry fee.

New Pre-Associate (overseas only)
The New Pre-Associate has replaced the previous two-part Pre-Associate 1 & 2 for overseas candidates. For UK Theatre Branch candidates the Pre-Associate has been replaced by the Level 3 Diploma for Dance Teaching Assistants.
The examination is designed to ensure candidates have a thorough knowledge and understanding of the Association’s grade and awards syllabus and technique and have the skills necessary to assist a qualified teacher.

Theatre Branch: Ballet, Tap, Modern Jazz and Theatre Craft (overseas only)
How will you be assessed?
The New Pre-Associate is a practical examination conducted by an IDTA appointed Examiner. Candidates are required to produce a portfolio for the IDTA Examiner to review in advance of the examination. Candidates will be asked to demonstrate and discuss with the Examiner all aspects of the Pre-Associate syllabus. Technical aspects of the examination are from the Theatre Dance Syllabus, Grades & Medals.
Prerequisites
Depending on age and experience, candidates for the New Pre-Associate examination may be required to hold an Intermediate Performer Award in the appropriate genre. Minimum age for Part 1 is 16 years old. Full details are given in the appropriate “Technique of Theatre Dance Book” available from the IDTA shop.
Future progression
Following completion of the New Pre-Associate, the next level of professional teaching is Associate.

The Freestyle Pre-Associate examination is designed as an introduction to the professional teaching qualifications and develops the candidates knowledge and understanding of the genre so that they can assist a qualified teacher.
